Dictionary API

All dictionaries on tapdict can also be used from your own app, reading tool or script. The API is free, needs no key and answers in JSON.

Basics

  • Base address: https://tapdict.com/api/v1
  • Only GET requests. Answers are JSON in UTF-8. CORS is open, so you can call the API from a web page.
  • Limit: 600 requests per 10 minutes per IP address. Above that you get status 429.
  • The content is AI-generated and can contain mistakes. Please say so in your app and link to the entry (each result has a url).
  • Free for personal and non-commercial projects, see the terms of use. Planning something bigger? Write to us.

List the dictionaries

GET https://tapdict.com/api/v1/dictionaries

Every dictionary has a slug (for example norwegian-bokmal-english) that you use in the other requests. online tells you whether its entries can be looked up.

GET https://tapdict.com/api/v1/dictionaries/{slug}

Details of one dictionary: version, number of entries, quality figures and the available download formats.

Look up a word

GET https://tapdict.com/api/v1/dictionaries/{slug}/lookup?q=fjorden

Finds the entries for a word exactly as it appears in a text, also inflected forms. The answer contains the headword, a short gloss, the entry as plain text and as HTML, its word forms and the address of its page:

Search

GET https://tapdict.com/api/v1/dictionaries/{slug}/search?q=house&limit=20

Full-text search in headwords and translations, so you can also search from the target language. Returns headword, gloss and address. limit is 1 to 50.

One entry

GET https://tapdict.com/api/v1/dictionaries/{slug}/entries/{headword}

The entry for an exact headword (URL-encoded), or status 404.

Offline use

If you need the whole dictionary, please download it instead of calling the API for every word. The spreadsheet download contains all entries and word forms as tables.
