Frequently asked questions

Can’t find your answer? Write to [email protected].

Are the dictionaries really free?

Yes. You can download and use them for free for your own reading and learning. No account, no email address, no ads.

Which e-readers and apps are supported?

Every dictionary comes in formats for Kindle, Kobo, KOReader and other StarDict apps (GoldenDict, Onyx Boox, PocketBook with KOReader, many Android readers), Xteink with CrossPoint firmware and the Yomitan browser extension. There is also a spreadsheet version, and you can look up every word on this website.

How accurate are the entries?

The entries are written by AI language models and checked automatically, partly by a second, larger model. Most of them are right, but some are wrong or incomplete. On each dictionary page you find our measurements, for example the result of a spot check by hand. Please use the dictionaries as a reading aid, not as an authority.

Can I look up inflected words?

Yes, that is one of the main ideas. The dictionaries are built from real texts and include the word forms that appear in them, plus generated forms. Tapping “fjorden” leads to “fjord”, tapping “went” leads to “go”.

Why is there a short check before the download starts?

To keep bots from downloading everything over and over, your browser solves a small calculation before each download. It takes a second or two and needs no clicks. It runs on our server and in your browser only: no third-party service, no cookies.

Do you track me?

No. We set no cookies and use no analytics or ads. We count how often each file is downloaded per day, just a number without any information about who downloaded it. See the privacy policy.

May I share the files or put them on my website?

Please share a link to the dictionary page instead of the files. Then everyone gets the newest version. Republishing, selling or bundling the files with other products is not allowed without our permission. See the terms of use.

Is there an API?

Yes. A free JSON API lets you look up words and search translations from your own app or tool. No key needed, see the developer page.

How often are the dictionaries updated?

Whenever a dictionary has improved noticeably, we publish a new version. The version number is part of the dictionary’s name on your device and is shown on its page. To update, download the new file and replace the old one.

My language pair is missing. Can you add it?

Maybe! Write to [email protected] and tell us which language you are learning and in which language you would like the translations. Requests help us decide what to build next.

I found a mistake. What should I do?

Thank you! Send the word, the dictionary and what is wrong to [email protected]. We collect reports and fix them in the next version.
