How to add a dictionary to your Kindle

Kindle e-readers only accept dictionaries in Amazon’s own format. Our Kindle download contains the source files, and Amazon’s free Kindle Previewer turns them into a Kindle dictionary in one step.

1. Build the dictionary file (once, on your computer)

  1. Unpack the ZIP on your computer.
  2. Install Kindle Previewer 3 (free, Windows and macOS).
  3. In Kindle Previewer choose File → Open and select the .opf file inside the unpacked folder. Converting a large dictionary can take a few minutes.
  4. Choose File → Export and save the result as a .mobi file.

2. Copy it to your Kindle

  1. Connect the Kindle to your computer by USB.
  2. Copy the .mobi file into the folder documents/dictionaries on the Kindle.
  3. Eject the Kindle. The dictionary now appears in your library.

3. Use it while reading

  1. Open a book in the language of the dictionary and long-press a word.
  2. If another dictionary opens, tap the dictionary name in the pop-up and pick the new one.
  3. You can also set it as the default: Settings → Language & Dictionaries → Dictionaries.
