How to add a StarDict dictionary to KOReader and GoldenDict

StarDict is the most widely supported dictionary format. It works in KOReader (on Kobo, Kindle, PocketBook, Android and Linux), GoldenDict, Onyx Boox readers and many Android reading apps.

The download is a ZIP file. Inside is a folder with several files (.ifo, .idx, .dict.dz, .syn). Keep the folder together, the reader needs all of them.

KOReader

  1. Unpack the ZIP on your computer.
  2. Connect your e-reader by USB (or use the file manager on Android).
  3. Copy the dictionary folder into KOReader’s dictionary folder:
    • Kobo: .adds/koreader/data/dict/
    • Kindle: koreader/data/dict/
    • PocketBook: applications/koreader/data/dict/
    • Android: koreader/data/dict/ in the internal storage
  4. Restart KOReader.
  5. Open a book and long-press a word. The entry appears in a pop-up.

To choose which dictionaries are used and in which order, open the menu while reading, then Search (magnifying glass), Dictionary settings, Manage dictionaries.

GoldenDict (Windows, macOS, Linux)

  1. Unpack the ZIP into a folder of your choice.
  2. In GoldenDict open Edit → Dictionaries → Sources → Files.
  3. Click Add…, choose the folder and press Rescan now.

Onyx Boox

  1. Unpack the ZIP and copy the dictionary folder into the dicts folder on the Boox storage. Create the folder if it doesn’t exist.
  2. In NeoReader, select a word, open the dictionary pop-up and choose the new dictionary in its settings.

Inflected forms included

Our dictionaries contain the word forms that appear in real books. Tapping “fjorden” finds the entry “fjord”, so you don’t have to guess the base form.
