How to add a dictionary to your Kobo

Kobo e-readers can use extra dictionaries in Kobo’s dicthtml format. The easiest way to install one is the free command-line tool dictutil.

Our Kobo download is a ZIP file. Inside is the actual dictionary file, named like dicthtml-nb-en.zip. Unpack our download, but don’t unpack the dicthtml file. The Kobo reads it as it is.

With dictutil (recommended)

  1. Download dictutil for your computer (Windows, macOS or Linux).
  2. Connect your Kobo by USB.
  3. Run dictutil install dicthtml-xx-yy.zip in a terminal (use the real file name).
  4. Eject the Kobo. Open a book, long-press a word and choose the new dictionary in the pop-up.

By hand

  1. Copy the dicthtml-…zip file into the folder .kobo/dict/ on your Kobo. The folder is hidden, so turn on “show hidden files” on your computer.
  2. Open .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf in a text editor and add the language code of the dictionary under [ApplicationPreferences], for example ExtraLocales=nb.
  3. Eject the Kobo and restart it. Details are in the dicthtml install guide.
